About Captain James A Lovell Federal Health Care Center

The Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center is a unique VA clinic that offers an extensive range of healthcare services for those who served our nation. They’re an integrated care clinic located within the Great Lakes Naval Station in a quiet corner of North Chicago, Illinois. It’s 35 miles north of downtown. Vets from downtown Chicago and nearby Waukegan can easily access them through public transportation including trains and buses.

Their services encompass substance use treatment, mental health support and infectious disease screening. They offer specialized services for various VA populations including LGBTQ+, minorities and women veterans. Homeless veterans or those at risk of homelessness can also benefit from a tailored program to get safely housed and gainfully employed.

They can provide three levels of addiction treatment depending on your psychological and clinical needs. This includes residential care, intensive outpatient program (IOP) and aftercare support. These recovery services are available in Building 11 within the center. You can get assessed here if you feel like you’re misusing drugs or alcohol. Their clinician will create a personalized care plan to guide your healing journey after your assessment.

Your care plan will determine the level of care or support you need. This will most likely be residential care if you’ve severe symptoms. This highly structured program may begin with medically supervised withdrawal to let your body rid itself of toxins. This is followed by intense inpatient therapy in both individual and group settings. The program may also involve educational classes and workshops. Your care team will provide medication assisted treatment (MAT).

Most vets move from residential care to intensive outpatient programs. IOP is flexible in that you can attend therapy while still maintaining your job or family obligations. You can even attend sessions virtually through their telehealth services.

Their aftercare services help you maintain progress by providing ongoing support. Aftercare sessions are scheduled outside regular business hours. This includes evenings and weekends to make it easier for you to attend. They can connect you to self help groups like AA/NA and essential community resources that support lasting sobriety. This may include safe housing and job opportunities.

More community support services can be accessed through their social work. This ranges from help with finances to home health services and legal and transportation aid. You can also partake in health coaching to various complementary therapies like yoga, acupuncture and mindfulness classes. You can also partake in outside excursions and head over to Guardian Park for exercise and a chance to unwind.

Veterans who abuse drugs are prone to infectious diseases like HIV and hepatitis C through the sharing of needles or other drug paraphernalia. This facility provides screening, treatment and preventive care for these diseases in their infectious disease departments.

They accept Medicaid, Medicare and Tricare. Financial aid is available as well if you meet eligibility criteria.
