About Milestone Recovery

Milestone Recovery offers residents of Maine a medically detox program in Portland, Maine. It stood out to me that, at the time of writing, this organization is the only nonprofit medical detox program in southern Maine. Whether you are insured or not, no Maine resident will not be denied services due to inability to pay.

I like that you will be safe and medically supervised as you transition through the acute stage of withdrawal. Their nursing staff will be available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. The nurses and the supervising physician will provide you with the medical care needed to manage your symptoms and help with the transition out of detox. The program lasts 3-7 days.

Depending on your substance use history, the detox program is usually three to seven days in length. You will be able to meet with counselors in both individual and group therapy. With the help of the counselors, you will be able to identify and secure resources. You will also be provided with support for your next stage of care.

Peer navigators are also available. The peer navigators will work with you to ensure that your transmission is successful. They are also in long term recovery.

In May 2024, they expanded the detox program. It went from 16 beds to 30 beds, allowing them to treat double the amount of people. They now have 15 double occupancy rooms, three new group counseling rooms, a lounge, a commercial kitchen and they also expanded the nurses facilities.

I also like that with their expansion, they were able to expand their outpatient program. It’s now an all new 150-person program that is co-located onsite. With the outpatient program expanding and having it in the same location as the detox program, you will be set up for success as you transition out of detox.

Levels of Care

  • Inpatient

Inpatient and residential programs provide round-the-clock medical and emotional support as you live at the treatment facility. This level of care may be recommended if you have severe addictions or mental health conditions since it removes outside distractions and allows you to focus solely on therapy.

  • Outpatient

In outpatient therapy, you’ll attend therapy sessions several times each week while living at home. This is ideal if you have a strong support system and a lower risk of relapse. Outpatient treatment offers flexibility to maintain work, school or family obligations.

Detox Service Setting

  • Inpatient Detox

Inpatient detox occurs in a dedicated treatment facility. You’ll live there around the clock and receive intensive medical support and supervision to help manage your withdrawal symptoms. It is suitable for individuals with moderate to severe addictions as it ensures a stable detox environment.

  • Outpatient Detox

Outpatient detox gives you access to medically supervised withdrawal services while still allowing you to live at home. You’ll attend a clinic for treatment and monitoring. This flexible option is suitable for those with mild to moderate withdrawal symptoms who have strong support systems.

Programs

  • Teen (13 - 18)

  • Adult (18+)

Adult programs address the substance use and life challenges specific to adults. Therapists can deliver sessions in individual, group and family settings. Services often include job support and life skills training in a structured environment.

  • Women

Women's programs offer a safe and supportive space to focus on gender specific issues such as trauma, family roles and mental health conditions. Therapists tailor the sessions to address women's needs and foster empowerment in a healing and nurturing environment.

  • Men

Men's programs address substance use while also considering the social pressures, family roles and mental health concerns that are specific to men. You’ll learn healthy coping mechanisms as you build emotional resilience and develop communication skills.
