About NIH Clinical Center
The NIH Clinical Center is America’s largest research hospital and is located in Bethesda, Maryland. They conduct large scale research studies on different illnesses and conditions in order to better understand, diagnose and treat them. One area of their research is addiction, and several of their addiction research approaches involve a supervised detox period. This allows you to receive medical attention to ease withdrawal symptoms and ensure you’re detoxing safely.
Supervised Alcohol Detox and Treatment
One specific group of researchers is busy examining the way alcohol and alcohol addiction affects the body. Their long-term goal is to develop new ways to treat alcoholism. The study involves staying at their location for about four weeks while going through alcohol detox and receiving treatment.
This study is open to anyone over the age of 18 who has unsuccessfully tried to stop their excessive drinking. Volunteers must use alcohol more than other substances and cannot be pregnant or breastfeeding.
Improving Research on Opioid Use Disorder
If you’re currently using opiates or receiving treatment for using opiates, you can participate in a research study that examines the ways opiates affect your brain function. They’re specifically interested in the influence of opioid use disorders on your brain’s dopaminergic signaling, which is a fancy way to explain the way dopamine interacts with receptors in your brain.
Something great about the NIH Clinical Center is that if you’re eligible to take part in a research study, you can often receive treatments and procedures at no cost. This is an incredibly helpful option for anyone struggling to afford more expensive treatment centers.
