About Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System New Orleans VA Medical Center
The New Orleans VA Medical Center is a Veterans Affairs hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, that’s part of the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System. It’s the primary VA facility in the region and is a multi departmental hospital with inpatient and outpatient (OP) care across many different specialties. One of those is drug and alcohol addiction.
When it comes to detox, the VA offers medically managed detox. This means that you’ll have medical monitoring by experienced professionals who can make sure you’re healthy. They’ll be able to see any signs of complications and address them right away if they arise. Meanwhile, they’ll also give you care to keep you as comfortable as possible during your withdrawal.
One of the strategies they use here for detox is medication assisted treatment (MAT). This is mostly for opioid addiction. They give you medications that basically make your body think it’s getting opioids like heroin and fentanyl. They gradually decrease your dependency on the drugs while also easing your withdrawal symptoms and cravings.
While the detox treatment here is extensive, I should also point out that that’s only the start of the VA’s addiction treatment program. They have residential treatment and intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment to help you address the root causes of your substance use disorder.
For the most part, clients here are happy with their care. Some do say that there’s a lot of turnover, so they get bounced from one provided to another often ,and others say that they have a hard time getting reliable information from administrators. Overall, though, clients say the staff here are friendly and helpful.
It’s important to note that this is a VA center, so the treatment is for veterans and military service members and their families. Your treatment will also be paid for by your military benefits.
Levels of Care
-
Inpatient
Inpatient and residential programs provide round-the-clock medical and emotional support as you live at the treatment facility. This level of care may be recommended if you have severe addictions or mental health conditions since it removes outside distractions and allows you to focus solely on therapy.
-
PHP
Partial hospitalization programs provide comprehensive treatment in a structured setting during the day but allow you to return home at night. These programs offer a balance of inpatient and outpatient rehab and provide intensive support without full time residency.
-
Outpatient
In outpatient therapy, you’ll attend therapy sessions several times each week while living at home. This is ideal if you have a strong support system and a lower risk of relapse. Outpatient treatment offers flexibility to maintain work, school or family obligations.
-
Aftercare
Aftercare programs provide ongoing support after you complete a rehab program. They may include several components to help you maintain sobriety including therapy, community support groups and relapse prevention strategies. This gives you a network of resources as you reintegrate into your daily life.
-
Dual Diagnosis
Dual diagnosis programs address substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions simultaneously. This integrated approach to care improves the likelihood of long term recovery and stability by addressing the root causes of addiction.
-
Intervention
An intervention is a structured and professionally guided conversation with an individual who is struggling with addiction. During the conversation, family and friends will encourage you to seek treatment. This is often a pivotal step for those resistant to getting help.
