About Polk Street VA Clinic
Polk Street VA Clinic is part of VA North Texas Health Care System. This outpatient facility is located in Dallas, Texas. You can get to the clinic from downtown Dallas in about 15 to 20 minutes.
This facility offers military sexual trauma care. This is a highly specialized program to support victims of military sexual trauma. This includes being pressured into sexual activities, engaging in them without consent, or being forced into sex. Inappropriate touching, threatening sexual behavior or comments and unwanted advances count as well.
You can receive counseling and treatment if you experience any of the above during military service. It doesn’t matter when you served or your gender. Military sexual trauma can leave deep emotional scars. Some vets may turn to drugs or alcohol to numb the pain or escape the memories. This coping method can lead to substance use issues over time.
It makes sense that this program includes substance use treatment alongside mental health counseling and psychological support groups. Substance use treatment here may involve trauma focused care using evidence based models like seeking safety and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). This helps you process trauma while building healthier coping skills that encourage a sober lifestyle and relapse prevention.
You may receive medication assisted treatment (MAT) as well if relevant to your complete healing. This involves using meds to curb physiological cravings and eliminate withdrawal symptoms. Medication management services may be part of this program too. They also take care of your physical health to ensure holistic healing.
The beauty of it all is that these services are free and require no VA disability rating. You can receive this care even if you’re not eligible for other VA care.
Another service available in this facility besides primary care is toxic exposure screening. This program helps identify harmful substances you may have encountered during your military service. This encompasses open burn pits, airborne hazards and radiation exposure. You’ll receive follow up screening every five years after the initial screening.
Levels of Care
-
Inpatient
Inpatient and residential programs provide round-the-clock medical and emotional support as you live at the treatment facility. This level of care may be recommended if you have severe addictions or mental health conditions since it removes outside distractions and allows you to focus solely on therapy.
-
Outpatient
In outpatient therapy, you’ll attend therapy sessions several times each week while living at home. This is ideal if you have a strong support system and a lower risk of relapse. Outpatient treatment offers flexibility to maintain work, school or family obligations.
-
Aftercare
Aftercare programs provide ongoing support after you complete a rehab program. They may include several components to help you maintain sobriety including therapy, community support groups and relapse prevention strategies. This gives you a network of resources as you reintegrate into your daily life.
-
Dual Diagnosis
Dual diagnosis programs address substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions simultaneously. This integrated approach to care improves the likelihood of long term recovery and stability by addressing the root causes of addiction.
-
Sober Living
Sober living homes provide a supportive and substance free environment for you to live in as you overcome your addiction. Residents must follow house rules and support each other's recovery journeys. Sober living fosters accountability and stability during this critical phase of recovery.
