About VA NY Harbor Healthcare System St Albans VA Medical Center
Based in New York City, VA New York Harbor Healthcare System is a primary care location that also offers addiction treatment services and support for homeless individuals in New York. Inpatient and outpatient care are available to adult veterans aged 18+ and their families regardless of their background. They accept Medicare, Medicaid, and other private insurance providers.
Due to high demand, the team here works with clients to schedule appointments as soon as possible. Sometimes, this may mean individuals get referred to other VA clinics or medical centers for their appointment, or even other local non-VA health facilities with availability. For urgent cases, this center does offer limited same-day appointments and walk-in care. Telehealth visits are also available for those unable to make regular in-person appointments.
Clients can access medically managed detox services here to safely stabilize, and wean themselves off of addictive substances. From here, clients may benefit from medication assisted treatment (MAT). This center uses FDA-approved methadone and buprenorphine to help individuals manage cravings and uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms. Nicotine replacement and other drug replacement therapies are also available.
Residential care is available for those in need of more intensive, structured addiction treatment. Meanwhile, intensive outpatient care (IOP) is a more flexible alternative for those who may wish to continue with work or study while they recover. Counseling and therapy options are provided, such as short-term outpatient counseling, and marriage and family counseling.
Self-help groups are also available, as well as specialized programs for specific veteran demographics. These include women’s only veteran groups, homeless veteran services, and groups for returning combat veterans. Post-recovery support involves aftercare planning, as well as access to relapse prevention resources.
Levels of Care

Inpatient

This level of care may be recommended if you have severe addictions or mental health conditions since it removes outside distractions and allows you to focus solely on therapy.
-
Outpatient
In outpatient therapy, you’ll attend therapy sessions several times each week while living at home. This is ideal if you have a strong support system and a lower risk of relapse. Outpatient treatment offers flexibility to maintain work, school or family obligations.
-
Aftercare
Aftercare programs provide ongoing support after you complete a rehab program. They may include several components to help you maintain sobriety including therapy, community support groups and relapse prevention strategies. This gives you a network of resources as you reintegrate into your daily life.
-
Dual Diagnosis
Dual diagnosis programs address substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions simultaneously. This integrated approach to care improves the likelihood of long term recovery and stability by addressing the root causes of addiction.
