About Oakland Behavioral Health Clinic – VA San Francisco Health Care System
Located in Oakland, California, the Twenty-First Street VA Clinic specializes in behavioral health with a full range of mental health and substance use treatment. Outpatient treatment services for drug and alcohol dependencies include medication management, medicated assisted treatment (MAT), and individual and group therapy. Referrals aren’t required.
I appreciate that the clinic offers early morning appointments so that clients can fit treatment around their daily commitments. Plus, if a client has to travel for care, the VA may be able to arrange transport or reimburse travel expenses.
Effective and Veteran-Focused Treatment
Considering the unique experiences of veterans and each person as an individual, personalized care plans match services to each client. In cases where chemical dependency is forming a barrier to treatment, medication assisted treatment (MAT) programs involve prescriptions to manage withdrawal symptoms and cravings. This reduces the risk of clients relapsing. Without the need for substances fogging the mind, they can better engage in addiction counseling.
At VA Health, addiction management medications are available for opioid, alcohol, and tobacco use disorders. They offer several medications for each substance use disorder, so clients can work with their provider to find one that suits them best in terms of risk factors and side effects.
If a chemical dependency is so severe that outpatient detoxification is dangerous, a client may be referred to a VA residential facility to undergo a medically supervised detox.
Getting Veterans Back on Their Feet After Addiction
I think it’s great that the Twenty-First Street VA Clinic also offers services that help veterans to improve their overall quality of life. Services include transitional housing and housing support for veterans experiencing homelessness and a compensated work therapy program.

They may include several components to help you maintain sobriety including therapy, community support groups and relapse prevention strategies. This gives you a network of resources as you reintegrate into your daily life.
