About Salem VA Medical Center

Salem VA Medical Center is a healthcare facility that offers a range of services, including treatment services for mental and behavioral issues like substance misuse. You’ll find ’em located out in Salem, Virginia. Support is available to adult veterans and their families. They also assist homeless veterans. Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE, and other private insurance plans are accepted.

Both inpatient and outpatient services are offered with the goal of providing drug rehab, health maintenance, and community support as part of a rounded recovery service. Featuring 24-hour therapeutic and educational programs, their inpatient facility is designed to support veterans with addiction issues, unemployment, homelessness, mental health, and overall well being.

A few therapy options are provided here for clients to choose from as part of both residential and outpatient services. These include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), and contingency management (CM). CBT aims to help clients change their self-perception, and break unhealthy thought patterns that may lead to substance abuse using a problem-solving approach and goal setting.

MI focuses on conversations between clients’ and their therapist, with attention to their motivations behind recovery as a means to strengthen and reinforce them.

CM is more focused on incentives for completing treatment with these incentives becoming more attractive the more consistently healthy clients’ behaviors become as a response to treatment.

Medication assisted treatment (MAT) is also provided using FDA-approved medicines like methadone, buprenorphine, Suboxone, and naltrexone. MAT is especially effective when applied with regular therapy sessions to help clients manage trickier withdrawal symptoms and cravings.

Levels of Care

  • Inpatient

Inpatient and residential programs provide round-the-clock medical and emotional support as you live at the treatment facility. This level of care may be recommended if you have severe addictions or mental health conditions since it removes outside distractions and allows you to focus solely on therapy.

  • Outpatient

In outpatient therapy, you’ll attend therapy sessions several times each week while living at home. This is ideal if you have a strong support system and a lower risk of relapse. Outpatient treatment offers flexibility to maintain work, school or family obligations.

Detox Service Setting

  • Hospital Detox

Hospital detoxification allows you to withdraw from drugs or alcohol in a hospital setting. It’s ideal for people with severe withdrawal symptoms or complex medical needs. You’ll receive constant monitoring, emergency care if needed and FDA approved prescription medications.

  • Outpatient Detox

Outpatient detox gives you access to medically supervised withdrawal services while still allowing you to live at home. You’ll attend a clinic for treatment and monitoring. This flexible option is suitable for those with mild to moderate withdrawal symptoms who have strong support systems.

  • MAT

Medication assisted treatment combines medication and counseling to manage withdrawal and reduce cravings for opioid and alcohol addiction. Medications may include methadone, buprenorphine or naltrexone. MAT is tailored to your needs so you can actively participate in your treatment journey.

Programs

  • Adult (18+)

Adult programs address the substance use and life challenges specific to adults. Therapists can deliver sessions in individual, group and family settings. Services often include job support and life skills training in a structured environment.

  • Seniors (65+)

Senior programs address the unique needs of older adults like chronic pain, grief and isolation. Programs include peer support and medical oversight for age related health concerns. The goal is to improve quality of life and promote sober aging.

  • Women

Women's programs offer a safe and supportive space to focus on gender specific issues such as trauma, family roles and mental health conditions. Therapists tailor the sessions to address women's needs and foster empowerment in a healing and nurturing environment.

  • Men

Men's programs address substance use while also considering the social pressures, family roles and mental health concerns that are specific to men. You’ll learn healthy coping mechanisms as you build emotional resilience and develop communication skills.

  • LGBTQ Friendly
