About Western Arkansas Counseling and Guidance Center Fort Smith
The Western Arkansas Counseling and Guidance Center is a mental health and addiction treatment center in a commercial district of Fort Smith, Arkansas. It’s not too far from Fort Smith Regional Airport and the Arkansas River. They have outpatient treatment and that includes medication assisted treatment for detox.
Medication assisted treatment, or MAT, uses specialized medications that reduce your withdrawal symptoms and cravings, and they can gradually lower your physical dependence on drugs or alcohol. They’re mostly used for opioid addiction because most types of MAT block your opioid receptors.
MAT helps with detox by making your withdrawal milder and more gradual. Those first days of recovery you’re at a high risk for relapse so MAT helps with the physical draw toward relapse while you’re getting addiction treatment like group therapy and individual therapy. If you like to unwind and clear your mind through recreational activity, Spartan Adventure Park is not too far away.
I think it’s important to note that this clinic does have mental health and addiction treatment for teenagers ages 13-17 too. MAT though is only available for clients ages 18 and older. At any age, this treatment center can help with your recovery journey through evidence-based therapies as well as crisis intervention and mental health care for co-occurring conditions. Plus, they have a primary care clinic so they can coordinate your addiction treatment and your primary healthcare.
If I’m being honest the reviews for this treatment center aren’t great. A lot of clients are frustrated not necessarily with the care here but with the processes and the administration. They say that it’s difficult to get an appointment with a therapist, especially for an in-person appointment and several clients say it’s difficult to reach the clinic on the phone. With that said though there are also some excellent reviews that say that the providers here are compassionate and understanding.

In outpatient therapy, you’ll attend therapy sessions several times each week while living at home. This is ideal if you have a strong support system and a lower risk of relapse. Outpatient treatment offers flexibility to maintain work, school or family obligations.
